Responding to Essay Questions
Grades are important when applying for the PFLAG New Orleans Scholarship; however, it takes a lot more than a GPA to tell your story.
The questions are an opportunity for you to give us a snapshot of who you are – your voice, your experiences, your goals. Your audience is the scholarship selection committee, and they would like to understand who you are and why you would like to be selected for the scholarship.
Telling your story to the scholarship committee is your opportunity to show how thoughtful, creative and committed you are to obtain a scholarship. Make it personal. If you have had personal experiences or challenges that have affected your personal growth and development, include them in your response.
Have you made a positive difference in the lives of others, whether in your family, community or school? The committee would like to know about your accomplishments in your activities. Please provide sufficient background information so that the committee will understand what you have accomplished.
The scholarship committee realizes that you may be providing very personal information and the information you provide will be kept confidential.

For example, if you have attended support group meetings, performed volunteer work or participated in events supported by LGBTQ organizations, please describe them and state what you have gained from the experiences.
2. Tell us about your work experience. What paid or unpaid jobs have you had outside of the LGBTQ community (including volunteer work), and what have you gained from these experiences?
3. Tell us about your interests, hobbies and/or extracurricular activities. Then choose one of these and tell us how it has affected your life.
4. What would you like to be doing ten years from now? How do you plan to achieve this?
